Start the day with the Victorian doll from Burning Girl, from the Dark Series by surrealist painter Michael Lawrence.

Burning Girl begins with something the artist found on the street: a weathered photograph of a young girl, so scratched and damaged that she looked as if she were on fire. Michael Lawrence built a painting around her. On either side stand a serene figure in deep blue, the Virgin of Guadalupe, and a Victorian doll in a flowing gown holding a rose, both with flames curling at their hems above green and blue waters full of fish. Two porcelain medallions, a human heart and the all-seeing Eternal Eye, are made with the same porcelain techniques Michael used for the figurines he created for Disney and Warner Bros. The painting is a meditation on how quickly childhood passes, and on fire as a force that purifies.

The mug:

  • 10 oz slim porcelain with a glossy white finish
  • The print stays vivid and keeps its luster through the microwave and dishwasher
  • Dishwasher and microwave safe

A small piece of surreal art for the morning coffee, and a gift with a story.

About the artist

Michael Lawrence

Michael Lawrence is a San Francisco surrealist painter who sees the true reality of life, not what people portray it to be, and paints his interpretation. His paintings are the kind you study in a museum, trying to work out what the artist was thinking and what inspired it.

Michael's works have been shown at the Harvey Milk Gallery, Gumps, Nordstroms, the deYoung Museum, Disney, and Warner Brothers. He has also held contracts with Disney Fine Arts and Warner Bros. to create porcelain figurines and collectibles. If you love Dali, Kahlo or Bosch, you will love his art.
