In Baby on Rhinoceros Beetle, part of Michael Lawrence's Baby Series, a chubby baby perches on a vibrant giant rhinoceros beetle in front of a weathered ship that seems stuck in low water. The ship was inspired by the ships and barges Michael sees floating in San Francisco Bay from his house. Ocean waves ripple under playful clouds, with rocky formations and lush greenery framing the scene. It blends innocence with the fantastical and rewards a slow look.
