Air: The Visitation is part of Michael Lawrence's Element Series, a painting brimming with symbolism. At its heart is a portrait of Empress Michiko of Japan, painted with an ethereal, angelic presence, a bridge between the material and spiritual realms. Two close friends of the artist flank her, transformed into celestial beings. A moose skull, a symbol of power and endurance, presides over both the natural and the supernatural. Behind them, stones erupt with lightning, and an egg, a recurring symbol of rebirth and creation, shows how the elements depend on one another for renewal.
